After a rainy day in Vancouver I left for Vancouver Island. I explored this beautiful island with Moosetravel (= travel agency for young independent backpackers)...The first leg from Nanaimo to Tofino at the west coast of Vancouver Island led trough wild forests and mountains. After swimming in one of the 700 lakes at Vancouver Island our guide gave us a bear savety lesson:" Never run (bear is faster than you), don't climb trees (bears can climb better than you do), shout at him... Other possibility: push the weakest of your group down and run for your life." Hmm, i would rather hug the bear:-). In the evening we arrived at the pazific and finally in Tofino, a small town living from the few tourists coming for sea kajaking, whale/bearwatching or surfing.

This over 800 years old eik cedar was classed dangerous and should be felled, but the villagers of Tofino protested. Two treelovers saved it finally with a sitdownprotest in its crown, during more than a month!

In Tofino I finally got the chance to surf again. After what I'd heard the water must be bloody cold. But it was warmer than expected and I caught some good waves. Sorry, no photo of the tube!;)
